Super fun documentary photography at Torre Abbey!

This is the Torre Abbey wedding of Laura & Dom. And I have been chomping at the bit to get it out on the inter webs! It’s safe to say I fell massively in like with this pair, I mean, look at the photos, they are a FUN lot.

This was a last minute booking which I was totally in rapture about. They were having their wedding in Devon, one of my most favourite places in the UK, like EVER. After Lizzi & Jono’s wedding I was pretty keen to get back there. On top of it being in a fabulous location, it was a Torre Abbey Wedding! I have shot here before and absolutely loved it (I will blog my other wedding from here soon, it was also a smasher!)

I drove up the day before because, well, DEVON! Good job I did, the motorway was pretty horrific. Top Tip; if you think ”I know I’ll leave early on a Friday afternoon” DON’T, everyone else has the same idea and you WILL get stuck. I stayed in a proper old skool hotel, it was a real experience and actually hilarious, if you haven’t stayed in a proper seaside hotel you MUST!

A little bit about Torre Abbey & The Spanish Barn.

The Abbey itself is a museum, the wedding takes place in the barn which is located to the side. Built along with the abbey in the early thirteenth century, this Tithe Barn is referred to as The Spanish Barn. This is because it was used for 14 days to imprison 397 POWs from the Spanish Armada. In 1740 the buildings had a Georgian remodelling and this is still intact to this day. Fast forward just a few years and we now have this beautiful wedding venue, I can’t imagine those poor prisoners had any inkling can you?!

Laura & Dom’s wedding party!

Once Laura & Dom had said their vows and become Mr & Mrs Bateman, the party really got started. I took photos of the formal groups whilst their guests enjoyed canapés on the lawn. We had time for some portraits in and around the ruins of the abbey itself, this is one of my favourite locations to shoot in, it is just so historic and lovely!

The children (and some of the adults) made the most of the bouncy castle and fun lawn games, which was really fun to shoot! We were invited to get back into the barn because the speeches were about to begin. It is safe to say Dom got royally stitched up, but it was all for the lols and all done in good humour!

After the speeches had ended, I walked with Laura and Dom to the shore. It was really important to them to have some photographs by the sea. And I LOVE the sea, so winner winner chicken dinner.

When we returned, there was beer pong, MORE FOOD (this wedding had so much food OMG!) and onto the dancing! This wedding had it all, the guests were absolutely brilliant fun. I massively enjoyed photographing every single one of them. We took the calculated risk of doing a sparkler shot. Considering I was absolutely petrified, I think it worked quite well. What an absolutely ace day!
